A CLOSER LOOK AT YOUR INDUSTRY

Start with your business.

Food service and accommodation depend on premises, equipment, stock and people working together. A useful review follows what could stop you serving customers, and separates the resulting costs.

YOUR BUSINESS

Where guests meet your business

01

Restaurants & Cafés

A restaurant or café depends on a working kitchen, safe food handling and a welcoming customer space. Cooking methods, extraction systems, refrigeration, outdoor seating and liquor service help explain the operation. A damaged appliance can affect stock and trading, but those consequences should not be treated as one automatically insured event.

Review property, public and products liability, machinery breakdown and any selected business interruption or deterioration cover as distinct parts of the discussion. Provide equipment values, maintenance arrangements, stock peaks and the time needed to reopen after serious damage. Changes such as catering, delivery or a new cooking process should be included in the business description.

02

Takeaway

Takeaway businesses often balance a small premises with a large flow of orders. Food may leave through the counter, a delivery platform or the business’s own drivers. Responsibility for food handling, packaging and delivery needs to be understood across that journey, particularly when several parties are involved.

Describe the cooking setup, refrigeration, order channels and who performs deliveries. Consider property and products liability alongside the actual use of vehicles and any selected breakdown or interruption sections. Delivery-platform arrangements should be read rather than assumed to protect every participant. Keep food-safety, cleaning and maintenance records as part of managing the business, independently of insurance.

03

Hotels & Motels

Accommodation businesses combine buildings and guest rooms with a range of services. A pool, restaurant, function space or longer-term occupancy can change the risk profile. Damage to only part of the property may disrupt bookings, while the owner, operator and building manager may each have different responsibilities.

Explain the ownership and operating structure, room numbers, facilities and seasonal income pattern. Property, guest-related liability and business interruption should be reviewed alongside reinstatement values and a realistic recovery period. Guests’ belongings, additional activities and loss of bookings without insured damage require specific consideration rather than an assumption that an accommodation policy includes everything.

MAKING THE CONNECTIONS

Look beyond the label

01

Equipment repair is only one question

A failed refrigerator may create a repair bill, spoiled stock and lost trading income. Machinery Breakdown, selected stock-deterioration extensions and interruption sections can have different triggers and limits. One accepted claim does not establish cover for every consequence.

02

Food, guests and everyday activity

Supplying food creates a products question; customers visiting the premises create an activities and liability question. Accommodation also involves guest property, facilities and changing occupancy. Explain delivery, catering and events as well as normal trading.

03

Restarting after an interruption

Repair time, replacement equipment, stock availability and rebooking can affect the time needed to restart. Discuss the financial basis and period for interruption cover rather than selecting it only by a property value.

IMPORTANT DISTINCTIONS

Keep the boundaries clear.

Power failure, wear and tear, maintenance, temperature monitoring and contamination can be treated differently by the wording. Not every spoiled-stock or loss-of-income event follows the same insurance trigger.
If the fridge is insured, is lost income also insured?
Not automatically. Repair, deterioration and interruption need separate checks against the selected sections, event, limits and waiting or indemnity periods.
