Public Liability Insurance

Public liability concerns claims that your business activities caused injury to someone else or damage to their property. It follows the activities you perform, including work at customers’ premises and responsibilities under contracts.

Who it is for

Businesses whose activities involve contact with members of the public or other people’s property.

Explore the cover

These are areas to discuss, not an automatic inclusion list. Available sections and cover depend on the selected wording and schedule.
01

Injury and property-damage claims

A selected policy may meet covered compensation and associated defence costs. The insured business description, territorial scope and treatment of property in your care need close attention.

02

Contractual responsibilities

An indemnity or warranty can create responsibilities beyond those your policy covers. Provide relevant contracts for insurance review; legal interpretation of the agreement remains a separate task for a qualified adviser.

03

Keep adjacent covers distinct

Professional advice, defective-work rectification, employee injury and product recall should not be treated as automatically covered. Errors and omissions wording must be checked against the actual activity rather than used as a synonym for all liability.

Information for quotations

Describe activities at all locations, turnover, subcontractors, products supplied, work at height or away from premises, contracts and incident history.

Limitations and exclusions to discuss

Discuss the insured activity, exclusions, contractual responsibilities, custody or control of property, limits and excesses. Professional services and products issues need separate consideration.

An Errors & Omissions label does not establish that a Public Liability extension applies. Check the service, insured parties and wording.

Frequently asked questions

Does Public Liability automatically cover professional mistakes?
No. The work, alleged loss and policy wording determine the question. Professional advice or design should be discussed under PI as well.
Is every Errors & Omissions cover a PL extension?
No. E&O terminology is used in different arrangements. Identify the actual activity and loss, then compare the relevant PI, liability or specific extension wording.
