Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional indemnity addresses claims arising from the professional services or advice described in your policy. The work you perform matters more than your job title, particularly where advice, design and practical delivery overlap.

Who it is for

Businesses providing professional advice, design, specifications or services relied upon by clients.

Explore the cover

These are areas to discuss, not an automatic inclusion list. Available sections and cover depend on the selected wording and schedule.
01

Your professional service

Describe advice, reports, specifications, designs and other deliverables, together with the clients and territories involved. Explain subcontracted work and any responsibility you retain for it.

02

Compensation and defence

Covered civil-liability claims may involve both compensation and defence costs. Inquiry expenses or other extensions need separate verification rather than being treated as standard benefits.

03

Design and contract responsibilities

Design-and-construct work needs the design obligation and construction role described separately. A consultant’s insurance does not automatically insure the contractor, and contractual guarantees may extend beyond the cover.

04

Claims, timing and disclosure

Review notification requirements and the policy’s treatment of earlier work and known circumstances. Keep records of services, complaints and changes in scope so they can be considered against the actual proposal.

Information for quotations

Describe each professional service, qualifications, fees, contracts, design responsibilities, subcontracted work, claims or circumstances and existing PI history.

Limitations and exclusions to discuss

Discuss insured professional services, claims and notification requirements, retroactive terms, assumed contractual duties, warranties and relevant exclusions. PL and Contract Works remain separate.

An Errors & Omissions label does not establish that a Public Liability extension applies. Check the service, insured parties and wording.

Frequently asked questions

If we outsource all design, do we still need to discuss D&C PI?
Yes. Explain any design obligations accepted in your main contract and your consultant arrangements. Outsourcing does not itself establish that the builder’s exposure has disappeared.
Does the consultant’s PI automatically insure the builder?
No automatic protection can be assumed. The parties insured, professional services and contractual arrangements must be examined separately.
